Mayoral elections: High Court Invalidates Reservation For Women Candidates

Mangalore, Jan 6,2014: The notification on the reservation of mayoral posts in Mangalore and other cities was invalidated by the high court.The state government is directed to renew the reservation criteria for the post.

 

 

 

An agenda of reservation with regard to Mangalore, Hubli-Dharwad, Belgaum, Davangere, Bellary, Gulbarga and other corporations, with the post of mayor reserved for a woman candidate from general category had been announced by the government in August 2013.

The mayoral elections in Mangalore were scheduled to be held on September 12, 2013, but were postponed due to the hindrance caused by JD(S) corporator Abdul Aziz Kudroli who challenged the notification in the high court,asserting that the mayor’s post had been reserved for women candidates four times in six years. In the first week of September, just before the election scheduled to be held, the high court ordered a bide on the notification.
