Manipal rape accused Anand formally arrested

Udupi, June 30, 2013: Today when Anand was discharged from KMC hospital, Manipal, instead of being greeted by loving family members, it was only the open arms of the local police that he had to walk into. Anand is the last of the trio of accused in the Manipal gang rape case. He had been caught on June 27th, when he was in the process of committing suicide, fearing imminent arrest by the police.

A life of misery seems to await Anand. Just last week he was walking free. Then on June 20th  night, the unspeakable happened when a medical student studying with Manipal University was allegedly abducted and brutally raped by a gang of three auto drivers. When police launched one of the largest manhunt ever to take place in this region, Anand along with his friends Yogish and Harish showed up on the police radar.

 

In a case of desperate bravado Yogish called up the Inspector General of Police himself on his cell phone and spilled the beans on his two friends before claiming to have consumed poison to evade arrest. Using mobile tracking devices, police located him some time later and found that he had indeed consumed poison. Yogish is presently recovering in ICU at KMC Hospital and his condition is said to be critical. Harish too was picked up almost immediately. Anand was the last of the accused to be caught. Like Yogish, he too had been admitted to KMC Hospital following his suicide attempt.

The hospitalization had prevented the police from formally arresting both. Today after Anand was discharged from the hospital, police promptly took him into custody and he was transported to Manipal police station under tight security. He is expected to be produced in court on Monday July 1.

Similarly Yogish too will be arrested once he is discharged from the hospital. Their interrogation and statement is crucial for the police to reconstruct the crime and slap charges against them so as to secure their conviction.
