Manipal gang rape condemned across state; CM directs cops to speed up probe

Manipal, June 23, 2013: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed the police department to speed up probe into the case of gang rape of a medical student of Manipal University and bring the culprits to book.

The Chief Minister who spoke to reporters in Bangalore, said the police department has  been asked to initiate stringent action against the rapists. He said the department has further been requested to  ensure safety of students studying in the Manipal University campus.

 

 

 

Udupi superintendent of police Dr Boralingaiah said the culprits would be arrested soon as police had obtained ’some leads’ on the incident that has triggered protests from students. Boralingaiah said eight police teams have been working on the leads and hoped to crack the case soon. In the morning, hundreds of students, braving rains, took to the streets to protest against the incident and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits. In Mangalore the protest was led by Aam Admi Party and other student organizations like SFI and Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP).

 

Four people have been detained on Sunday in the alleged gangrape of a medical student of the Manipal University. The 22-year-old final year MBBS student was allegedly abducted when she was returning to her flat from the college library on Friday night. She was then taken to a nearby forested region by three unidentified men in an autorickshaw and gangraped.

The girl has been given medical help and is out of danger. The victim, who suffered a fracture in the legs and injuries on her hands and neck, has been recovering.
