Mangaluru, July 1, 2015 : Kannada Press Day was celebrated at Patrika Bhavan in the city on July 1, Wednesday under the joint auspices of Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists Union and Mangalore Press Club. Dr M Mohan Alva, Chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation, inaugurated the programme.
In his inaugural address, Dr Alva highlighted the role of media in the society. The fourth pillar of democracy should always present facts before the society, he further added.
N Gururaj, former editor of Udayavani who was present as a chief guest regretted that “some media houses have become more like a business and were also trying to protect vested interests.” There is also intense competition with more and more newspapers entering the field, he added.
Manohar Prasad, Chief of Mangaluru Bureau of Udayavani in his address, exhorted upcoming journalists on the intricacies of journalism.
On this occasion, the organisers of the programme honoured Umesh Yekkar, a newspaper collector. His collection of newspapers dating back to nearly half a century was displayed on the occasion.
Jagannath Shetty Bala, President of DK District Working Journalists’ Association, PB Harish Rai, former president and several other journalists were present at the function.
