Mangaluru: Medical Emergency, Sailor Evacuated with Coast Guard Help

Mangaluru, July 19, 2019: A medical emergency due to accidental injury sustained by a sailor was reported from New Mangalore Port late last night. On receiving information of the crisis, India Coast Guard District Headquarters 3 stationed at New Mangalore immediately began to coordinate the evacuation of the victim for treatment.

The injured sailor is identified as Sonu Soni aged 30 years. He was crew member of MV Vishva Prerna, a bulk cargo ship. He had sustained neck injuries while lashing the crane hook. On being evacuated, with assistance provided by the ship’s local agent, he was shifted by ambulance to AJ Hospital in the city, where he is undergoing treatment. He is reportedly safe and out of danger, according to Coast Guard sources. The evacuation was made at about midnight, it is learned.

The vessel was on passage to Kochi from New Mangalore Port. After the accident onboard was reported, it was asked to head closer to NMPT harbour to facilitate evacuation. The intimation to Coast Guard came from Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC, Mumbai), it is learned.
