Mangaluru, Jul 08, 2019 : Progressive farmer and former mayor of Mangaluru city Devanna Shetty Kulai (94) passed away at his residence in Kulai on Monday evening (July 8) following a brief period of illness. He is survived by three sons and a daughter.
Devanna Shetty was a Yakshagana artist and had worked with various troupes including Suratkal Mahammai Mela. He had served as the Chairman of the Taluk Board, and was a member of the Zilla Parishad.
Devanna Shetty was elected Mayor in 1997 on his very first entry to the city corporation and served one term as the first citizen. He was elected with the highest margin from Kulai ward after Greater Mangalore was created by adding Kulai, Suratkal and other nearby areas to Mangaluru. During his tenure, he renovated the town hall and made it available for performing arts on a low rent.
Devanna Shetty was a member of the executive committee of the Nandavar Mathru Sangha and was the founder of Bharathi English Medium School in Kulai.
Funeral will be held on Tuesday, 09-07-2019 at 10 am at Kulai.
