Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, July 26,2016: The Principal District and Sessions Court, Mangaluru,  sentenced to life five persons who were found guilty of the murder of a 29-year-old labourer in December 2007. The murder came to light two years later when the body was discovered in a pit.

court sentenceAccording to the charge sheet by Mangaluru Rural police, Siddappa (29), a native of Bagalkot, married Kasturi and lived in a rented house in Kuloor. Mohammed Anwar (30) of Balloorgudde visited his house often.  He developed a physical relationship with Kasturi, who left the son born out of her wedlock with Siddappa in Anwar’s house. Siddappa had frequent fights with his wife about this.

Anwar and Kasturi hatched a plot to murder Siddappa. On December 6, 2007, Kasturi brought Siddappa to a spot close to the railway track in Balloorgudde. Anwar and his four friends, Mohammed Naufal (23), Mohammed Salim (26), Abdul Bashir (37) and Abdul Naushad (32), joined Kasturi. They strangulated Siddappa and buried the body near the railway track, the charge sheet said.

Siddappa’s brother Basappa filed a missing person’s complaint with the Mangaluru Rural police on August 22, 2009. The police questioned Kasturi, who under pressure spilled the beans and showed the police where the body had been buried.

Inspector B.R. Lingappa arrested the five accused. After exhuming the body, it was subjected to DNA analysis, which revealed that the body was indeed of Siddappa. Public Prosecutor Pushparaj examined 23 witnesses.

Principal District and Sessions Judge K.S. Bilagi found Anwar and his four friends guilty and pronounced life imprisonment of which 3 years will be rigorous imprisonment.. Both sentences will run concurrently, the judge said. The court did not pass any order against Kasturi as she has been missing since obtaining bail a few weeks after her arrest.
