Mangaluru, Jan 14, 2024: Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has experienced a decline in its national ranking in the Swachh Survekshan 2023, despite engaging in numerous campaigns. The city, which held the 63rd position in 2017, 52nd in 2018, 165th in 2019, 192nd in 2021, and 146th in 2022, has now slipped to the 253rd rank in 2023.
In the comprehensive Swachh Survekshan survey, encompassing 446 cities nationwide, MCC secured the 253rd position. At the state level, it stands at the ninth position out of 25 cities in Karnataka. Udupi secured the tenth position in Karnataka and the 278th position in the national ranking, while Kundapur Municipality secured the sixth position in Karnataka.
Swachh Survekshan, initiated by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) since 2016, stands as the world’s largest survey focusing on urban sanitation and cleanliness. It plays a crucial role in instigating healthy competition among towns and cities to enhance service delivery to citizens and contribute to creating cleaner urban environments.
According to the MoHUA’s Mangaluru city factsheet, MCC, with its 60 wards and a population of 4,88,968 (as per the 2011 census), received a citizen voice rating of 1,192.4. The city’s report card indicates a 95% achievement in door-to-door waste collection and 72% in source segregation. The municipality scored 6% in waste generation versus processing, 0% in the remediation of dumpsites, 92% in the cleanliness of residential areas, 92% in market areas, 67% in water bodies’ cleanliness, and 80% in the cleanliness of public toilets.
