Mangaluru, Dec 11, 2016: Reports are rife that the famed ’bella candy’ (jaggery candy) is back. Thanks to perseverance and trial and error by city’s award winning ice-cream entrepreneur Mukund S Kamath, residents of Namma Kudla can go back to their childhood past time of sinking their teeth in the delicious ice-candy that has dollops of jaggery, fair sprinkling of cardamom, grated coconut in equal measure making this product a mouth-watering prospect in this city known for its high levels of humidity.
While the final research and development product did hit the ice-cream parlours that Mukund runs in the city a couple of days ago, its major mass launch will be at the 10th edition of Rx Life Cycle Rally scheduled for December 11. Participants at the rally will be able to sink in their teeth’s in to this sweet treat at the conclusion of the rally and Mukund has come forward to sponsor some 2,500 ’bella candies’ for the cyclists’ young and old alike who will take part in the rally.
It was persistent queries from Mukund’s overseas cousins, his elder brother Prabhakar and his well-wishers that set him thinking on the need to revive this once famous must eat item during vacations that children coming to this part of the state craved for. "We started the trial productions in July and have thus far tried out some 15 variants," Mukund said adding his research and development team worked on all aspects of the product as well as its packaging.
