Mangalorean powerlifters win 19 medals in Asian Powerlifting Championship

Mangalore, May 10, 2012: Three men and three women powerlifters from Mangalore won a total of 19 gold, silver, and bronze medals at the Asian Powerlifting Championship held at Udaipur in Rajasthan from May 1 to May 7, 2012.

While Harish Kumar of Morgan Gate, Ashwin Kudroli, and Vinod Raj of Vamanjoor won a total of 8 medals in the men’s championship, Deepa Kulal and Amitha Poojary of Gokarnanatha College and Neha H. of SDM College in Ujire won a total of 11 medals in the women’s championship.

 

Harish Kumar won 4 gold medals, Ashwin won 3 gold medals, and Vinod Raj won one silver medal. Deepa Kulal won 4 gold medals, Amitha Poojary won 4 silver medals, and Neha H. won 3  bronze medals.

A total of 270 powerlifters from 17 countries participated in this event, and there were 60 participants from India alone. Many of the participants were from Balanjaneya Gymnasium on Car Street, and all the three men who won medals are members of this gym.

The championship event was organized by the Indian Powerlifting Federation. It comprised a number of categories such as bench lift, squat, and others.

The victorious powerlifters were given a warm welcome when they returned home on May 10. They were taken in an open jeep from the railway station to the Balanjaneya Gymnasium and then to Gokarnanatha College, where they were felicitated.

The trainers of these victorious powerlifters are Purushottam Poojary and Sandeep Rao.

Indian Powerlifting Federation Vice President Sathish Kudroli said that he was happy to see his team returning home victorious for the second year. He also requested the government to recognize and support these talented people.
