Mangalore, Oct 2, 2014: Mangalorean girl M R Poovamma along with team constituted Priyanka Pawar, Tintu Lukka and Mandeep Kaur bagged gold in women’s 4*400m relay at the Asian Games on Thursday. The team clocked 3:28.68 minutes to break the Games Record set by India in Guangzhou four years back.
Another Mangalore based star athlete Sahana Kumari finishes eighth in women’s high jump, while Ashwini Akkunji finished 4th in 400m relay.
In 400m relay, India took a small lead after two laps before Mandeep widened the gap in the third lap after holding out a strong challenge from her Japanese counterpart. Poovamma, who won a bronze in 400m race, then anchored India to gold by blasting her way to the finishing line.
Although hailing from Kodagu, Poovamma’s family has been living in Urwa Stores, Mangalore for many years. The 24-year-old Poovamma also won a brone medal in women’s 400m sprintof with 52.36 on Sunday, Sept 28.
India start Day 13 of the Asian Games 2014 in Incheon on Thursday at the 11th place. At the evening of Thursday, India hit the 9th place with 9 golds, 9 silver and 36 bronze medals. India is expecting few more golds as both the men and women team were in the finals. Today in a thrilling final, India got the better of Pakistan to win the Asian Games men’s hockey gold after 16 years. India and Pakistan were locked 1-1 at the end of 60 minutes of regulation time. In a dramatic shootout, India prevailed 4-2 after goalkeeper Sreejesh brought off a couple of stunning saves.
