Mangalore, Jul 5, 2013: Talented athlete MR Poovamma who hails from Kodagu but lives in Mangalore has clinched silver in the women’s 400 meter race by clocking 53.37 seconds in the 20th Asian Athletics Championships being held here.
Poovamma earlier had hopes of winning gold in the women’s 400m but the athlete running on a big stage for the first time, finished second in 53.37 seconds. Poovamma, who ran below her personal best of 52.75 sec, later expressed satisfaction with her performance. "I tried my best and I am satisfied with my performance. I was expecting a medal and I won it. I was expecting competition from the Chinese and she ran a good race," she said. "I am not going to try to qualify for the World Championhsips next month. I am not disappointed," she added.
She is second on the Asian lists this season but among the entries here, the Indian is the best with her 52.75 at the Federation Cup in April. Poovamma dominated the Asian Grand Prix series this year, sweeping all the three competitions in Bangkok, Chonburi and Colombo. She said the wins had boosted her confidence but her main aim remained the top spot here for more than one reason.
