Mangalore, Feb 24, 2014: The impasse over the election of Mayor for Mangalore City Corporation has finally ended. After a long wait, a Divisional Bench of the High Court in an interim judgement has reserved the post of Mangalore Mayor to a general category candidate, while the Deputy Mayor’s post will go to a general category lady candidate.
The High Court has also directed the state government to hold the Mayoral elections as per the reservations fixed.
The election to the Mangalore city corporation was held in March 2013 and the Congress had won a clear majority. However, in developments later on, a JD(S) corporator had moved the court challenging the reservation of the post of mayor for a lady candidate.
Of the total 60 wards in MCC, the Congress had won in 35 wards, BJP in 20, CPI, Independents and other parties , one seat each.
During the previous BJP tenure too, the issue of Mayor had gone to the court once, when during the last year of the BJP term, Gulzar Banu of Congress was elected mayor by default after Roopa Bangera, the BJP candidate failed to furnish all details while filing candidature for the post of mayor. In this case, the court ruling was in favour of Gulzar Banu.
