Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, May 31, 2012: Life in Mangalore has come to a standstill in due of the call for a nationwide bundh issued by the BJP, NDA allies, and left parties in protest against the hike in petrol price.

The busiest streets of Mangalore looked forlorn and deserted on the morning of May 31, Thursday. Although the BJP had announced that it will be a voluntary bundh, people chose not to come out of their houses.

Schools, colleges, and commercial establishments did not open their doors, and shops did not raise their shutters. The bundh, however, does not apply to essential services such as milk, medical stores, fire services, and ambulance services.

Since KSRTC buses decided not to ply, passengers from Mangalore to Kerala are left stranded in Mangalore. The police department is arranging private vehicles to take them from Pumpwell to Talapady.

The police department has beefed up security and police teams are constantly taking rounds of the city to make sure that the bundh is peaceful. So far, no unsavory incidents have been reported in Mangalore.

According to an announcement made previously by the BJP, vehicles arranged to take people for weddings and other functions will be permitted on the roads.
