Mangalore: Customs seize 1.350 Kg of Gold at Mangalore International Airport

Mangalore, Feb. 1, 2014: The customs officials at Mangalore International Airport seize 1350.8 Gms. of Gold valued at Rs.40,48,450/- on 31-01-2014  from a passenger arrived  here by Air India Express Flight IX814 from Dubai.

 

The officers of customs at Mangalore International Airport seized one KG of Gold bar and eight silver coated gold wires totally weighing 1350.8 gms valued at Rs.40,48,450/- by way of Non-declaration and concealment in the beading of a trolly bag from a passenger. The passenger is identified as Mohammed Azhar, a resident of Bhatkal, Karnataka, who arrived at Mangalore International Airport on 31-01-2014 at 07-30 AM by Air India Express Flight IX814 from Dubai.

The above operation was conducted under the supervision of Krishna Kumar Prasad, Asst. Commissioner of Customs MIA, who also recorded the statement of the passenger. The passenger was arrested and produced before the Magistrate who has remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days. Investigation is in progress under the supervision of D. Purushotham, Commissioner of Costoms, Mangalore.

It is further informed that in the similar modus operandi, earlier, passengers have tried to smuggle Gold but were caught by the customs. In all, during the month of January 2014, with increased vigil, the officers of customs at MIA, Mangalore have detected 6 Gold smuggling cases involving seizure of 3476 Gms of Gold valued at Rs. 106.34 lakhs.
