Mangalore Airport to get new Primary Radar System

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Aug 24, 2013 : In a significant development, Mangalore International Airport would soon be equipped with a modern Primary Radar System that can give accurate information pertaining to weather and cloud formation to landing aircrafts.

The installation of this Radar System gains relevance particularly in the backdrop of the  Air India Express tragedy three years due to a crash landing.

As of now, the Mangalore Airport has only a secondary radar which  gives information to overhead aircrafts (aircrafts which take off from the airport). But the new primary radar will be exclusively for landing aircrafts  and will be of great help to the Pilots and the ATC.

The installation of the radar would also help in landing of more aircrafts in  a short span of time and would be a great boon in times of inclement weather and would also avert  diversion of the aircrafts.

Here it is also worth mentioning that a few years ago,an aircraft carrying Congress President Sonia Gandhi could not land at the Mangalore Airport and had to return  to Delhi owing to lack of adequate information regarding  cloudy weather conditions.

JT Radhakrishna, Director of the Airport said the construction of modern control tower is in finishing stages while there are also  plans to have a  parallel taxiway and two additional aero bridges.

He also said a team of experts would shortly be arriving  to the airport in connection with the installation of primary radar.
