Mangalore, Aug 2, 2011 : M. R. Vasudeva Rao, the director of Mangalore Airport, inaugurated the Mechanized Environmental Support Service (MESS), sophisticated cleaning equipment, and said in his inaugural address the airport has decided to utilize MESS because airports are mirrors of cities, being the first point of contact for international passengers visiting the city.

Mr. Rao also said that, according to a customer satisfaction survey, Mangalore Airport has secured 79 points in the first round, 75 points in the second round, 83 points in the third round, and 85 points in the fourth round. Lucknow Airport has scored the highest with 95 points in the fourth round, he said, adding that Mangalore has emerged as the one of the two toppers in South India.

Durga Facility Management Service Private Limited, Mangalore has the tender to clean up the airport—a project worth Rs. 1.23 for a 3-year period. Rs. 33 lakh will be spent on cleaning up the old terminal. The work will be undertaken as per the standards set down by ISO: 9001:2008.

B. S. Shetty, the managing director of Durga Facility Management Services Pvt. Ltd., said that 70 percent of the cleaning work will now be done by MESS and labourers will be employed only to handle the machinery. He also said that 16 different types of chemicals will be used to clean various areas of the airport such as glass, floor, and metal parts. Since the primary focus will be on hygiene, all the dusters will be given colour codes to ensure that they will used for specific purposes.

MESS has been purchased for Rs. 30 lakh, and Mr. Shetty says that the tender will be extended for 2 more years if the work is satisfactory. He said that the staff will be given a standard operation procedure, according to which they must work and a checklist will also be provided to ensure that the work is done properly.

Further speaking on the cleaning project, he said that 3 varieties of cleaning procedure will be employed—weekly, daily, and monthly. He said the Walk Behind Scrubber machine can clean 59,000sq.ft. per hour and do the work done by 6 human beings. One man can easily clean the roof using the Hydrolic Jack.

Mr. Shetty introduced the machinery and even spoke safety measures that need to be taken while operating it.
