Janardhana ReddyJune 18: After the ill-conceived and unsuccessful attempt of former Chief Minister S M Krishna to transform Bangalore into Singapore of India, a Malaysian firm is now approaching the State Government to develop Mangalore along the lines of the East Asian City-State.

Titled “Mangalore City Vision 2025”, the project envisages developing the coastal City’s infrastructure at a cost of $ one billion. A presentation to this effect was made before Minister for Tourism G Janardhan Reddy here after he inaugurated the new premises of the Jungle Lodges and Resorts Ltd, a unit of the State Tourism Department, on Thursday.

The project envisions water-based and entertainment-themed investments apart from boosting the City’s public transport with modern tram and cable ropeway modes connecting ten stations spread all over the City. That is to say, the project would integrate all tourist spots of the coastal City.

According to Reddy, the company made the presentation after carrying out four months of “diligent research” of Mangalore’s potential. According to him, the Government will look into the feasibility of the project, to be executed on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis, once the company submits the proposal within the next four days.

Later, a company official refused to draw similarities between the project and the controversial Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise (NICE). “We are not asking for free lands,” he maintained.  Reddy also said that the process of inviting Expression of Interest (EoI) and proposals for an aqua marine park and a golf course in that City was over and they would be approved shortly.

About tourism investments in the State, the Minister said that Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) to the tune of Rs 2,800 crore were signed for projects in Bangalore, Mangalore, Hassan, etc. during the recent Global Investors’ Meet.
