The programme was organised by Karavali Karnataka Janabhivruddhi Vedike and Karavali Chitrakala Chavadi in association with Corporation Bank Officers’ Organisation.

Over 25 artists depicted the industrial disasters on canvas to create awareness among the people. The event was a part of the campaign to protest against the proposed expansion of Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Ltd and the consequential risk of disaster to the citizens of Mangaluru. Along with senior artists, even students too joined hands in creating painting.

Karavali Karnataka Janabhivruddhi Vedike Convener
T R Bhat said, “As per the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board index, 70% of pollution in Mangaluru and surrounding areas is due to setting up of industries more than the carrying capacity of the coastal district.”

He said, “Dakshina Kannada has seen a lot of changes in the last 30 years. The air and water are polluted.

About 34 mishaps have occurred in industries from 2011-17 and 15 persons have lost their lives. As per the guidelines of the Central government, industries should be set up 25 km away from cities having a population of 3 lakh. However, the rules are flouted in Mangaluru while setting up the industries.”
