Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, July 19, 2016: Reports state that MSEZ,  Mangalore Special Economic Zone Limited will distribute a compensation of Rs 1 crore to traditional fishermen in Baikampady area.   The decision on the compensation was decided at a meeting of MLA Mohiuddin Bava, MSEZ officials and the representatives of traditional fishermen in the presence of DK DC Adoor B Ibrahim.

sezThe traditional fishermen, who are engaged in fishing using traditional boats for livelihood were demanding compensation from the MSEZ, which has been releasing effluents to the sea over the past few years. The release of the effluents had resulted in the shortage of fish causing hardships to the fishermen.

Responding to the woes of the fishermen, MLA Bava directed the DC to initiate suitable measures to benefit the fishermen. Even though the MSEZ Limited had deposited Rs 1 crore in the district administration’s account, the amount could not be distributed to the fishermen due to technical problem over the last three years.  The MLA directed the officials to make arrangements for the immediate distribution of compensation to the fishermen.

Funds :  The meeting decided to transfer the amount back to the MSEZ’s account and the compensation amount to be transferred directly by the MSEZ to the bank accounts of the fishermen.   A total of 1,500 traditional fishermen will benefit from the compensation. DK DC Ibrahim and Assistant Commissioner Dr Ashok were part of the meeting.
