Organised by Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd., (MRPL) in association with Mangalore Bicycle Club (MBC), the cyclothon was flagged off by Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP and J.R. Lobo, MLA. The cyclothon was a part of “Oil and Natural Gas Conservation Month”, a Nation-wide campaign of Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. PCRA is undertaking the campaign for creating awareness about conservation of fossil fuel, reducing wastage of petroleum products, and promoting non-motorised transport along with public sector oil companies. It has two components—educational campaign through various media and on-ground events like cycle rallies, MRPL stated in a release. PCRA has planned cycle rallies in 77 cities across the country during four months from November.

MBC general secretary Ganesh Nayak said the club stood for reducing carbon footprints and joined hands with MRPL gladly towards its committed cause. Over 35 members of the club rode with about 250 cyclists from MRPL, including students, employees, and members of their families, he said.

After the flag off, the riders went across the city, including Mahatma Gandhi Road, Bunts’ Hostel, Ambedkar Circle (Jyothi), Hampanakatte, A.B. Shetty Circle, and Karnad Sadashiva Rao Road before winding up at Scouts Bhavan in Lal Bagh.
