MP Nalin Kumar inaugurates Mangaluru’s first Postal ATM

Mangaluru: July 10, 2015: Department of Posts joined the financial inclusion channel to deliver financial services at affordable costs to sections of disadvantaged and low-income segments of society with the first Postal ATM set up at Pandeshwar Head Post Office becoming operational on Friday. The ATM was inaugurated by MP Nalin Kumar Kateel.

Shirthady Rajendra Kumar, Post Master General, South Karnataka Region, Bengaluru said as many as 70,000 of the 1.80 lakh Post office Savings bank account holders in Dakshina Kannada will be able to transact through this ATM.

He said ATM cards will be issued on request at free of cost and as of now, only Post office account holders can transact through India Post ATMs. ``The account holders of 378 Core Banking Solution (CBS) migrated offices in Karnataka Circle can make use of this ATM. Interoperability service will be enabled shortly which will enable account holders to transact through any ATMs across India,’’ he said. The second ATM will open at Kulshekar.

Kumar said the Department of Posts has adapted to the demanding situations by implementing technological solutions in all its services. Department of Posts has decided to set up 1,000 ATMs in first phase. Out of this 126 locations are operationalized in India. Karnataka Circle was allotted 76 ATMs in first phase and the first ATM Karnataka Postal Circle at Bengaluru GPO was inaugurated by the Communication and IT minister Ravishakar Prasad in April this year. Subsequently, ATMs at Basavanagudi, Kalaburgi, Dharawad and Mysuru HO have also been made operational.

Kumar said as on date CBS has been implemented in 2,590 post offices - 800 Head Post Offices and 1,790 Sub Post Offices - across the country. Remaining post offices are slated for migration shortly. In Karnataka Circle 378 post offices - 58 Head Post Offices and 320 Sub Post Offices - have been migrated to CBS. Remaining 1,334 post offices will be migrated in a phased manner by the end of this year, said Kumar adding this will benefit 1.60 core account holders to transact across the country through CBS Post offices.
