Mangaluru May 31, 2016: MP Nalin Kumar Kateel inaugurated Savayava Mela and Expo at Kadri Park on May 31, Tuesday. Savayava Mela is jointly organized by Government of Karnataka, Zilla Panchayath and Agricultural Department in order to create awareness among farmers about organic farming.
Speaking on the occasion Nalin Kumar said that a large number of people were dependent on agriculture in the coastal region and allayed misconceptions that agriculture is a non-profitable profession.
Stating that there was huge demand for organic vegetables and other products he said there are also amenities that help farmers market organic produce. The several problems faced by farmers have forced many in the outskirts of Bantwal and Puttur opt for rubber cultivation, he said and added that lack of farm labourers and water problems were taking toll on farming profession.
DC AB Ibrahim stressed the need for greater awareness among farmers about the importance of organic farming.
ZP President Meenakshi Shanthigod, ZP Vice President Kasturi Panja, ZP CEO Shree Vidya, Sampath Samrajya, Prabhakar Mayya, Programme Organizer Dr Hanumanthappa, Dr Harish Shenoy and others were present.
