MCC plans committee to harness water source efficiently

Mangaluru, May 22, 2016: With the near possibility of Nethravathi at Thumbe hitting rock bottom, and failure of pre-monsoon showers, MCC, Mangaluru City Corporation has floated plans to ensure there is no repeat of the precarious experience in future. With Thumbe the main drinking water source for this coastal city dipping precariously to 3.7 feet on May may 19,  Thursday against full level of 13 feet, MCC has sent a proposal to the DK district administration for managing this source better in the future.

The proposal points to setting up a district level committee headed by DC with MCC commissioner as member secretary. This committee will hold review meetings starting December every year and monitor water level at all weirs and dams upstream from Thumbe vented dam, MCC, commissioner, informed media that all stakeholders will be made part of the committee to ensure transparency in water usage. 

Given that there are industries that depend on the Nethravathi solely, it only makes sense to have their representatives as a part of the committee to ensure anything incorrect is taken note of and course correction done at earliest possible stage. With power being generated at Shamboor using the same water, as per permissions  allowed to do so; as well as industry drawing water upstream,  a fool proof plan has to be in place.
