Mangalore, July 30: Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash, the commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), has been promoted to the post of CEO of ZP. He will take over on Aug 1, Monday. 


Addressing reporters at a press conference held at the KUDCEMP office today, Dr. Vijayaprakash said that the MCC has launched a number of projects to keep the city clean and green. Since the MCC had to cut down a number of trees while widening roads, it has taken measures to plan 22,000 saplings in schools and colleges, he said. The civic body will also take care of these saplings, he added.

Further speaking on the achievements of the MCC, he said that the civic body has launched 3 Mangalore One outlets in Mangalore, the first civic body in the state to do so. The civic body has also launched a counter called Nagara Mitra for the benefit of the public and an Asha Chavadi for the physically challenged and senior citizens on its ground floor. 


The civic body has collaborated with self-help groups and Stree Shakti to experiment with trade licenses, had done UGD connection for the first time, and used SHG staff to make the system more transparent, he said. 


Speaking about the awards won by the civic body, he said that the MCC has bagged the solid waste management award, two ultra tech awards, and green leaf award besides emerging as the second cleanest city in Karnataka. 


Currently, the MCC is working on the concept of litter-free bins within the city and has received seven points for e-waste collection. Regarding the self-assessment scheme (SAS), he said that the MCC has raked in profits of Rs. 9.67 crore in 2008 – 09 and Rs. 38 crore in 2010 -11 and hopes to be the first in the state to make a 98 percent profit. 


The MCC has also provided a park for physically challenged children at Gandhinagar in Mannagudda and has beautified a park at Hat Hill for women. He also expressed his happiness about the success of the census procedure, adding that the SC population has also been surveyed and that flats worth Rs. 1.5 lakh each have been constructed for daily wage earners at Mahakalipadpu. 


He also said that the civic body has reserved Rs. 5 lakh for traffic management and other pending projects. The civic body also intends to widen KS Rao Road and Balmatta Roads, he added.
