Loud sound beneath earth panics Manchikere residents

Udupi, Oct 7, 2014: Residents of Manchikere-Rajeevnagar alongside the Manipal-Alevoor Road were panic-stricken on October 6, Monday morning on hearing a loud sound from beneath the earth. However, no crack or fissure has been noticed on earth.

The latest incident has also aroused a lot of curiosity among locals particularly in the backdrop of the April 2014 incident wherein there was a sudden increase in ground water level in well and other water sources in the area. Later, there was panic when fissure was noticed on earth near Manchikere on July 1.

H.N.Udayshanker, Geologist of MIT strongly feels all the three incidents were inter-linked and the latest loud sound from beneath the earth might be due to collapse of cavity to make adjustments for hollow space created beneath the earth.
