Karkala, March 1, 2016: A lorry carrying beedi leaves was reduced to ashes after it came in contact with high tension wire near Bajagoli petrol station in the early hours of Feb 29, Monday.
The lorry was transporting tendu leaves, which are used to roll beedis from Chhattisgarh to Nalluru J K Tobacco producers when the incident occurred. The total loss is estimated at Rs 18.50 lac.
The lorries which are overloaded with beedi leaves, dry grass and cotton often end up meeting such mishaps.
Since transporting these commodities in a lawful manner leads to additional expenses, the parties involved end up overloading the lorries with as much quantity of these commodities as possible. Due to this, these light weight commodities are piled two to three times the normal carriage capacity leading to such mishaps.
