Mangalore, July 1, 2013 : Several residents of Adyar resorted to a flash protest on July 1, Monday morning when  railway officials arrived at the spot early in the morning to close the crossing, where a major casualty was reported on Sunday wherein a woman was killed and five others sustained injuries when their mini bus rammed into a goods train.

The local residents opposed the moves of the authorities to close the crossing and  instead urged the authorities to make it a regular crossing by listing it among the authorized railway crossings and also have sentries posted at the crossing. Their demand was to have humps on the nearby road so that vehicles do not speed forth.

It is worth mentioning here that the demand to regularize the crossing and also have a guard there had gone unheard of since the past several years.

The protestors  also stopped a train heading towards Mangalore from Bangalore for a few seconds, but later let it go when officials explained about the problems which their action might create.

The agitators pointed out that the crossing was the nearest and easiest route to go to Neermarga and other places.

The situation cooled down after local MP Nalin Kumar Kateel rushed to the place and  stopped the closing works of the road and assured that a decision would be taken at a meeting with officials concerned to be held in Circuit house on Monday. He also assured to expedite the proposal to have an under pass in the area.

As many as 500 people from Neermarga, Adyarkatte and Adyarpadavu  including Sudhaker Adyar, Vice President of Adyar Gram Panchayat, Surendra Kambali, former GP Chief, were part of the protest.
