The wild cat attacked Prema Bende when she was on her way to deliver milk to the dairy. She was left with scratch marks on her neck, ear, and under her eye.

Ms. Prema received first aid at the Taluk Government Hospital in Kundapur and was later shifted to the District Government Hospital in Udupi for further treatment.

Only Ms. Prema and her mother Beechu Bende live in their house in Japti.

Ms. Beechu normally sells the milk to the Japti Cooperative Milk Producers’ Society at 6.30 a.m. There was a religious function in their house the previous night and Ms. Prema decided to go.

The society is about a 10-minute walk from her house.

“But midway, a leopard suddenly jumped on me and I fell. Even before I knew it, it left me bruised and vanished suddenly,” said Ms. Bende, who is receiving treatment at the District Government Hospital here.

Prabhakar Kulal, Range Forest Officer, Kundapur Range, said that the Department had put up a cage to trap the leopard close to site where the attack took place.

“The leopard must have been crossing at that particular spot. Perhaps, when it was jumping to cross the path, Ms. Prema must have come in the way. It does not appear to be a targeted attack,” he added.
