Lakshadweep bound cargo vessel capsizes; all 6 crew on board safe

Mangalore, Feb 8, 2013 : A cargo vessel bound to Lakshadweep from Mangalore Port,   capsized in the Arabian sea about 50 nautical miles off the coast late night on February 6, Wednesday, after being caught in strong winds and high tidal waves. However, luckily all six crew on board are safe and reached Mangalore coast on the morning of February 7, Thursday.

The vessel from Mangalore  named ‘Al Masoor’ had set sail from old port with cement, jelly, iron rods and other construction materials and food materials on Wednesday morning. However, when the sea turned rough, the crew of the ship decided to return Mangalore. But even before the vessel could cover a distance of 15 nautical miles on its return journey, water began to seep into the engine.


The alert crew immediately contacted another vessel of Lakshadweep which arrived at the place late in the night and rescued the stranded crew who until then had seen to it that the vessel did not sink by pouring out the water that entered the engine.


The owner of the Al Masoor vessel in his complaint at the port office has said that the vessel has completely capsized incurring a loss of Rs 30 lakhs.
