Mangalore, Mar 18, 2013 : A cargo vessel which had set sail to Lakshadweep from Mangalore old port has capsized as far as 40 nautical miles away from the shore. However, the five crew on board are said to be safe. Abdurrazak of Bengre, his son and three others were in the capsized boat.
The boat belonged to Naveen Mendon of Bokkapatna. Named MSV Venkamma it had set sail on March 15 but met with a mishap late night on March 15, Saturday.
Matters turned worse the next morning and the crew abandoned the boat and made use of the life boat to save themselves. They say their efforts to drain the water from the boat using five pumps had gone in vain. Later they were rescued by the crew of another fishing boat of Mangalore, named Guru Maruthi The loss has been estimated at Rs 80 lakhs.
