Kundapur, July 2, 2015 : As many as 60 cell phones worth nearly Rs 4.5 lakhs were stolen from the Sannidhi Mobile Care shop in Sri Kotilingeshwara Towers of Koteshwara on the night of July 1.
The theft came to light on July 2, Thursday morning when the shop owner Suresh Poojary arrived as usual to open the shop which is functioning on the first floor of the building. That the thieves had entered the shop by breaking open the shutter was evident as it was half open when Poojary arrived at the spot.
It is learnt that Suresh who used to otherwise carry home all the cell phones kept for sale in the shop, at the time of closing, had stopped the practice sine the past two weeks owing to rains.
According to the owner, almost all new cell phones in the shop have been stolen. Senior police officials including DySP Manjunath Shetty, Circle Inspector Diwaker and others have visited the spot. Sniffer squads and finger print experts have also been pressed into service.
The several thefts reported in various parts of Udupi district in the recent past have given room for suspicion that a well organised racket of thieves was operative.
