Kundapur, Jan 16, 2014 : A lorry driver cum owner was arrested by the police with the help of public at Beejadi in Kundapur on the charges of robbing cash and diesel from other stationed lorries.
The accused is Anilappa who drives a lorry with Maharashtra registration. It is learnt he had initially tried to rob a local lorry driver named Rajendra who had parked his vehicle at Beejadi after unloading fish from Goa at the Beejady fish mill. Anilappa along with three others had snatched Rs 11000 from Rajendra’s bag after threatening him with knife and rods and tearing off his clothes.
The four had then tried to steal diesel from the diesel tank of the vehicle when two other drivers namely Suresh Gowda and Kumar who were resting, rushed to the spot. The thieves immediately took to their heels and escaped in their lorries. Meanwhile police were informed and they chased the lorries one of which hit against a tree. Anilappa who was inside the vehicle was arrested.
Police have seized three cans of 50 litre diesel each and a gas cylinder from the lorry.
Kundapur police are investigating. Meanwhile locals believe that the arrested man and his gang might be part of a big racket involved in robbing local drivers as well as stealing fuel from parked vehicles.
