They also protested against the proposed anti cow slaughter bill and the anti non vegetarian policies of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC).

Delivering the protest address on the occasion, K. L. Ashok, the general secretary of the vedike, said that Sharan Pumpwell, the convener of the Bajrang Dal, has a role to play in smearing cow dung on the professor’s face. Although saffron outfits repeatedly break the law, nobody is taking action against them, he added.

Criticizing the anti cow slaughter bill, he said that it prevents poor and underprivileged sections of society from gaining access to cheap and nutritious food. He also pointed out that saffron outfits are targeting only minority communities although all communities are involved in cattle trading.

Speaking about the need of the hour to develop proper slaughter house policies, he said that the absence of such policies have seriously affected the meat trade.

Suresh Bhat Baakrabail, district president of the vedike; Deekayya, Dalit leader; P. B. D’Sa, state president of PUCL; Nigel Pereira, president of Catholic Sabha; Ali Hasan, member of Meat Traders’ Association; and many others participated in the protest.
