Mangalore, May 5, 2014 : In a tragic incident reported from Nelligudde Aikala near Kinnigoli on May 4, Sunday, a woman and her son lost their lives while three other neighbours were injured in an explosion in a house located close by a stone quarry in the area.
The deceased are Erichamma (53) and her son Paraman Uttandy (25) hailing from Salem in Tamil Nadu. Their two-room shed like house was shattered due to the impact of the explosion. Neighbours namely Nagaraj, his wife Yashoda and Pooja, the couple’s ten year old daughter were injured in the explosion.
If neighbours suspect a gas cylinder explosion, there is also a suspicion that explosives used in the nearby quarry might have been stocked in the house and that led to the explosion. Police sources say they only found a gas cylinder regulator in the house.
There are at least 20 shed like houses of quarry workers in the vicinity and police are trying to ascertain if explosives are stocked in these houses.
At the time of the explosion most of the workers were away to buy essentials as it was a Sunday.
Erichamma and her son had moved to Kinnigoli to work in the quarry five years ago. She has another son named Muruga. It is learnt he had recent returned to Tamil Nadu. The woman has three daughters and her youngest daughter’s marriage has also been fixed, say her relatives.
Investigations are underway to know the cause of the explosion.
