Kasargod man arrested at airport for smuggling gold chains in thermos flask

Mangalore, June 13, 2013: A man from Kasargod who arrived at the Mangalore Airport by a flight from Dubai was trapped by the Customs officials when he was found smuggling gold ornaments weighing 157 grams in a thermos flask. The jewels have been valued at nearly Rs 3.37 lakhs.

The accused is identified as Shabab Mattummal(24) from Kolavayal in Kasargod. He had arrived by an Air India Express flight from Dubai at 6.30 pm.

He was found in possession of nine gold chains including one stone studded chain. The customs officials found the chains neatly wrapped in a white paper covered with a brown gum tape inside the flash.

The authorities on realizing that t his person had travelled several times between Mangalore and Dubai, now have the suspicion that he might have smuggled gold during earlier trips too.
