Kasargod,Aug 23, 2015: An ATM service engineer has been arrested by the Kasargod Police on the charges of stealing cash from ATMs. With the arrest of CG Vinod (25) from Kochi, the police here have almost solved a number of thefts in the district and elsewhere. It is said Vinod was wanted in connection with thefts in over 25 ATMs.
The police who were investigating on the basis of a complaint lodged in Badiadka Police Station in connection with the theft of Rs 84000 from the local ATM of Canara Bank of Badiadka, zeroed in on the service engineer on suspicion.
Initially the police summoned him to service the ATM and then grilled him when he admitted his guilt. During interrogation Vinod also revealed that he was responsible for theft of Rs 2 lakh from SBT Bank, Hosadurga in June last year and Rs 50,000 from the Udinoor branch of Kerala Rural Bank in March this year.
As service engineer of ATMs in Kasargod and Kannur, Vinod used to erase the video clippings stored in the hard disc after committing the theft. During servicing, the ATM machines are opened in the presence of bank managers after using the keys and digital passwords.Though the keys were returned after servicing, Vinod used to remember the password and used a duplicate key to commit the thefts.
He has been produced before court and remanded to 15 days of judicial custody.
