Mangaluru: August 28, 2015: Come Sunday, a long-standing wish of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy members will be fulfilled when the literary body finally moves into Tulu Bhavan in Urwa Store.

Tulu Academy

The academy has spent Rs 4 crore of the Rs 4.80 crore grant allocated by the state government for the construction of the four-storeyed facility, said Janaki M Brahmawar, president of the academy, here on Thursday. At present, the academy’s office is in the basement of Mangaluru City Corporation building. It has been functioning from this office for the past 21 years.

"The academy has been spending nearly Rs 3.60 lakh per annum as rent. This is why we thought of shifting the office to Tulu Bhavan, located some 2km from the present address, as soon as possible," Janaki told reporters.

Situated on nearly 50 cents of land in Derebail village of Urwa Stores, the bhavan will occupy nearly 43,000 sqft of area, said Chandrahas Rai B, registrar. "It is a basement plus three floor structure. The basement will be used for parking. The ground floor is reserved for offices of the academy and its activities. At present, only the ground floor is ready. The work on the remaining two floors will be completed later," he added;.

The completed floor houses a library, a workshop room, a guest room, a consultation room, a store room, a green room and a stage. The academy will need at least Rs 2 crore more to complete various other facilities including a 1,000 seat air-conditioned auditorium on the third floor, lift, and generator.

"We will approach the government for additional grants once the initial grant of Rs 4.80 crore is used," he said.

Minister for forests, environment, ecology and DK district in-charge B Ramanath Rai will inaugurate the bhavan. JR Lobo, Mangaluru City South MLA will preside. Elected representatives of the district will be the chief guests.
