Mangaluru Sep 27, 2016: Karnataka Rakshana Vedike staged a demonstration outside DC office on September 27, Tuesday to protest against the sand scarcity and the resulting skyrocketing of its price. The Vedike has alleged that the problem had arisen due to misappropriation of sand by a Congress leader.
Addressing the protestors, Civil Contractors Association President Purushottam Kottary said that the several rules and regulations which have been imposed to avail sand has dragged the workers into critical condition. There are lots of workers who are dependent on sand business and biased rules have left workers distressed, he added.
Dakshina Kannada is facing severe sand crisis but the officials are mum and have failed to solve the problem, he said.
District President of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Anil Das said that the District Administration has shown lack of concern towards sand workers and also pointed out how sand was illegally transported to Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
Several high profile people are involved in this sand mafia and are reaping benefits worth crores, he alleged.
Earlier, a protest rally was taken out from Hampankatta to DC office.
Civil Engineers’ Association Vice President Vijay Mayya, Sunil Kumar and others were present.
