Karnataka HC allows state govt to conduct board exams for classes 5, 8, and 9

Bengaluru, Mar 08, 2024: The Karnataka High Court has permitted the state government to conduct board exams for classes 5, 8, and 9. A division bench of the high court granted an interim stay to the order passed by the single-member bench on Wednesday. A single-member bench of the HC quashed the government’s order to conduct the examination. An interim stay was granted by the division bench on Thursday.

 

The state government had issued an order to conduct the board examination for the 5th, 8th, and 9th class students of the year 2023-24. The association of unaided schools approached the HC challenging the order of the government. A single-member bench, which had heard the petition, stayed the government’s order. The government filed its appeal after this order.

The 5th, 8th, and 9th class board exams are slated to begin on March 11. While government schools have not raised any objection, private schools have challenged the government order. In its appeal, the government submitted that the examination scheduled to be held on Monday has been hampered by this injunction. However, after hearing the arguments, the court stayed the order of the single-member bench.

During the BJP government, former Education Minister BC Nagesh had implemented a board examination for class 5 and class 8 students. The Siddaramaiah govt also thought of conducting board exams for 9th and 11th-class students.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) has begun the second PU exam and it will go on till March 22, 2024. The SSLC examination will be administered between March 25, 2024, and April 6, 2024.  Karnataka School Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa had earlier said that more than 6.9 lakh candidates registered for the second pre-university (PU) exam this year and about 8.9 lakh students registered for Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exams. The KSEAB has selected 1,124 examination centres across the state for the second PU exam and 2,747 centres for the SSLC examination.
