Karnataka Budget: Rs 100 crore for Waqf properties, 60% Kannada use mandatory

Bengaluru, Feb 16, 2024: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah presented the state budget at the assembly on Friday, in which he allocated funds for fee reiumbursement of minority students, Rs 100 crore for the development of Waqf properties, and mandated 60 per cent use of Kannada in all officers, shops and commercial establishments, among others.

During the budget presentation, the Opposition staged a walkout as Siddaramaiah attacked the BJP-led Centre. He alleged that Karnataka faced massive loss due to not getting the right share of funds from the Union government. Siddaramaiah blamed the Centre for the state revenue defect budget. He further claimed that many BJP-ruled governments are also facing injustice, but they are unable to raise their voice against the central government.

ALLOCATION FOR MINORITIES

1. Rs 100 crore has been allocated for the development of Waqf properties in the state.
2. Workshops for ’maulvis’ and ’muttavallis’ will be registered with the Karnataka Waqf board.
3. Rs 10 crore has been allocated for the construction of Haj Bhavan in Mangaluru.
4. Rs 200 crore has been earmarked for the development of the Christian community.
5. Programmes at the cost of Rs 393 crore through the minorities’ development corporation

USE OF KANNADA

Being the official language of Karnataka, an Act will be enforced to strictly make the use of the language in all offices, shops and various commercial establishments in the state.

PROTECTING MONUMENTS

The Karnataka budget mentioned that there will be a special focus on the protection and conservation of protected monuments, which are maintained by the Archaelogical Survey of India (ASI).
