Karkala: No ‘whips’ at Baradi Beedu Kambala; HC ruling honoured

Karkala, Dec 21, 2014: Following the lift on the ban on Kambala, the Baradi Beedu Kambala was held on December 20, Saturday under the strict eyes of the police personnel, government officials  and representatives of the Animal Welfare  Board. The Baradi Beedu Kambala held on Saturday also went down in history as the first Kambala that was held without the use of the whips or sticks by the Kambala jockeys.

As many as 130 pairs of buffaloes took part in the event and managed to run without being whipped.

Karkala Tahsildar Raghavendra, ten revenue officials SI Mahadeva Shetti and nearly 40 police personnel were present  during the Kambala to ensure that the animals were not subject to cruelty as per the HC ruling.

The representatives of the Animal Welfare Board, Chennai too kept a close watch and ensured that no buffalo was whipped.
