Karkala, June 01 2017: A leopard which barged into a cattle shed at Mallibettu in Ninjoor village attacked a cow and a neighbouring person who tried to save the animal on May 31, Wednesday morning. The leopard later fell victim to the anger of the locals.
Alwyn alias Valerian D’Souza (53) is the person who is seriously injured. He was initially admitted to Ajjarkad Government Hospital in Udupi and later shifted to Manipal Hospital. The cow which was attacked by the leopard has however escaped with minor injuries.
It is suspected that the leopard was in hiding in the attic of the cattle shed belonging to Appi Poojarti the previous night or during early morning on Wednesday. It attacked the cow in the morning. On hearing the noise, Appi’s neighbour Alwyn had rushed to the spot only to be attacked by the leopard. Though Alwyn tried to escape the leopard chased him. Locals who gathered in large numbers had no other go but to attack the wild animal which died on the spot.
The body of the leopard was later taken away by the Forest staff.
Earlier on Tuesday a leopard had attacked a person named Rama Moolya near Neerabailur Chitrabail.
