Karkala: Leopard lands in well in effort to chase a duck; rescuedThe incident is learnt to have taken place the previous night.

The leopard which had trespassed into the village had spotted one of the ducks reared by Obaiah Naik, a poultry farmer and had begun to chase it only to land inside the well along with the duck.

The next morning, when Naik realised that one of his ducks which was in the habit of sleeping  near a pile of firewood close by the well was missing, he began to search it and incidentally found it floating inside the well. It was only when he tried to get the duck out of the well that he noticed the big cat clinging on one side of the well.

The Forest Department was immediately informed and the forest personnel who rushed to the spot managed to rescue the leopard using a ladder. The leopard was later released in a nearby forest area.

Meanwhile, residents of Mala village who have seen forest personnel release rescued leopards in the nearby forest area  have often tried to  intercept the Department vehicles carrying the leopards mainly because these big cats once released to the forests, again trespass into human habitat and prey on domestic animals.
