Mangalore, July 17, 2012 : Ejaz Ahmad Alsam, national secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, released a Kannada handbook on human rights on July 16, Monday, and said that the central government must give adequate compensation for all the victims of the two encounters between the Maoists and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Chhattisgarh on June 27.

Stating that the CRPF killed 19 innocent people, accused of being Maoists, he said that two of them were teenage girls. Criticizing Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram for stating that he was “deeply sorry,” he said that being sorry will not relieve the victims and the centre must adequately compensate the families of each victim.

Speaking about human rights, he said that every person has the right to live and the government and society must protect the lives of innocent people. Giving examples of human rights violation in India, he said that several innocent Muslims are suffering because they are treated like terrorists. Stating that every person must fight against human rights violation, he said that anybody can become a victim if human rights are not protected.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, B. K. Ravindra, principal of SDM Law College, said that the need to create human rights awareness is most intense at present because there are a number of people who are still unaware of their rights.

Natesh Ullal, social worker, said that the newly released Kannada handbook has all the required information about human rights, adding that the handbook must be in every police station and in every house.

Suresh Bhat Bakrabailu, the writer of the handbook, said that people belonging to the scheduled tribes and to the backward class communities are still treated very badly.
