Mangaluru, Dec 16, 2014 : There were celebrations in undivided Dakshina Kannada district on December 15, Monday following the Karnataka High Court decision to permit Kambala subject to the condition that the buffaloes were not hurt in violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
Kamala organisers distributed sweets to the people on hearing the good news. The District Kambala Committee is meanwhile slated to meet in Moodbidri on December 16, Tuesday to discuss the issue.
Commenting on the High Court ruling, Gunapal Kadamba, Secretary of the Kambala Committee said the Kambala organisers should ensure that the High Court ruling is honoured and the animals were not subject to pain.
A Kambala organiser from Uppinangady said some Kambalas which could not be held in the past few days owing to the ban, would now be held in the next few days.
Meanwhile, Seetaram Shetty, an owner of Kambala buffaloes said the conditions have already been put into practice.
Procession in Udupi : The Udupi District Nagarika Samithi took out a victory march in the town on December 15, Monday following the High Court ruling. A pair of buffaloes was also taken out in the procession amid beating of drums and bursting of crackers.
Nityananda Volakadu, General Secretary of the Samithi led the procession.
