Mangaluru, July 5,2017: Reports state that detectives of City Crime Branch on July 4, Tuesday detained  two persons in connection with a botched up attempt to rob the Kotekaru Agricultural Credit Cooperative Bank.


robbery 5The incident was reported on June 23, when the accused entered the bank located at K C Road under Ullal police station limits and almost decamped with 20kg of gold ornaments valued at Rs 5.5 crore. The accused had pushed aside the watchman of the bank and gained entry inside.

T R Suresh, city police chief, said the accused Ramchandra,57, of Kurchigudde near Someshwara and Mohan Kumar, 47, of Pandit House, Shivajinagar, Kotekaru post, also went on to threaten the bank clerk Sudhir Ranjan and gold jewelry valuer Ramchandra Acharya with a knife. The accused also snatched the mobile phone of customer Manohari and forced all of them into a toilet of the bank and locked them inside.

Noting that the accused had covered their faces, Suresh said they then made their way into the safety vault and decamped with gold jewellery stored there. The trio locked up in the toilet in the meanwhile managed to break open the toilet door and come out. When they spotted the accused trying to make a getaway in a motorcycle parked outside, Acharya threw a big stone at the accused, making them lose their balance, drop the loot in the process and flee the scene.

A case was registered on a complaint from the bank manager, Suresh said, adding the CCB sleuths on detained the duo. During their questioning, the accused admitted to their involvement in the crime, Suresh, said adding Ramachandra, who works as a security supervisor at a mall in the city and Mohan, a partner in a transport company, resorted to the crime to cover up their business losses and repay their lenders.


Noting that the brazenness of their crime had caused a stir in K C Road area, Suresh said CCB sleuths recovered a motorcycle from their possession. The accused and the motorcycle have been handed over to the jurisdictional police station for further investigation, Suresh said lauding the role played by CCB sleuths headed by ACP Valentine D’Souza and his team in effecting the arrests.
