Kundapur, June 13, 2015: In a press release issued, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Zonal Agricultural and Horticultural Research Station, Departments of Agriculture, Horticulture and Forests and Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project would be organising a two-day State-level Jackfruit Festival at the Narayanaguru Kalyana Mantapa at Kundapur in Udupi district June 13 & 14, Saturday and Sunday.
Jayalaxmi N. Hegde, Programme Coordinator of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Brahmavar, said that jackfruit had been a major food item in coastal and Malenadu districts till a few decades ago. But people have forgotten jackfruit, which is high in nutritional value and it has taken a back seat in the local areas. Jackfruit growers in coastal and Malenadu districts also did not get proper returns for the jackfruits grown by them. The aim of the State-level jackfruit festival is to focus on the importance of jackfruit.
New varieties of jackfruits would be introduced at the fest to both the growers as well as jackfruit lovers. Growers could reap more benefits by doing value addition to the jackfruit. A variety of jackfruit saplings would be on display at the fest. A large number of value added products made out of jackfruit too would be on display. Demonstration of a few food products and snacks made out of jackfruit too would be held at the venue.
