Mangalore, Jul 14: The Islamic Cultural Centre, which is based in Mangalore, plans to launch a widespread campaign against the social evil of dowry, which has been plaguing all the people of India.

Speaking about the campaign at a press conference held on July 14, Wednesday, the leaders of the Islamic Cultural Centre said that Islam does not know the concept of dowry, but mentions “mehr” or certain gifts given by the groom to the bride at the time of marriage. They also said that a number of girls remain unmarried because their parents cannot afford to pay their dowries. Poor families approach loan sharks just to get their daughters married off, and in the process, they lose their houses and assets. Many people commit suicide, get killed, lose their mental balance, and suffer endlessly because of this menace of dowry. Sometimes marriages are broken because the bride’s parents are unable to pay the specified dowry.

The centre has called upon the Ulemas to advocate simple marriages, form area committees headed by religious leaders or Kazis to enforce common codes to conduct marriages, and encourage the youth to marry according to the principles of Islam.

A. P. Abubakker Musliyar, the general secretary of the All India Sunni Ulema Union and patron of the Islamic Cultural Centre of Kantapuram; P. M. Ibrahim Musliyar Bekal, the Kazi of Udupi district and president of the Sunni Jamiyyatul Ulema State Committee; Abusufyan H. Ibrahim Madani, the leader of the Karnataka State Sunni Youth Association; Abdul Rayoof Puttige, the chairman of the Talent Research Foundation, Mumtaz Ali, the general secretary of the Islamic Cultural Centre; Joint Secretary Mumtaz Ali; Treasurer Hyder Partipaddy; Treasurer Usman Haji Mittur; Masid Pakhya Mutavalli; and S. M. Rashid Haji were also present.
