Inter-varsity athletics meet from tomorrow

Mangaluru, Nov 23, 2018: The five-day 79th all-India inter-university athletics championship will begin at Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri on Saturday.

 

athletics.jpTalking to reporters here on Thursday, Kishore Kumar C.K., organising secretary of the championship and Director of Physical Education, Mangalore University, said that more than 4,500 athletes from 300 universities will take part in the event. This is the first time that the university is hosting the event. M. Mohan Alva, chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri, which is organising the event, said that among the athletes who will take part in the event include Dharun Ayyasamy, who won the silver medal 400-m hurdles in the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta, and Parveen Chitravel, bronze medal winner in triple jump in the Youth Olympics held in Buenos Aires. Dharun Ayyasamy and Parveen Chitravel are students of Alva’s College.

Dharun Ayyasamy and Parveen Chitravel are among the 80 students from Alvas College who are part of the 84-member Mangalore University team participating in the championship. The Mangalore University team bagged the overall team championship in the inter-university athletics championship in 2016-17 and 2017-18. Mr. Alva said that this is the third time that the foundation is organising a national athletics event. Mr. Alva thanked the former Minister of State for Youth Empowerment and Sports K. Abhayachandra Jain for getting a synthetic track laid at Swaraj Maidan and arranging for funds for the development of the maidan which is now helping athletes from the region. Apart from government funds, the foundation has spent over ₹ 35 lakh in improving infrastructure at the maidan.

The Alva’s Education Foundation will provide free food and accommodation facility for all athletes, coaches, sports officials and special invitees participating in the five-day event. Mr. Alva said that the foundation will give away cash prizes to not only medallists but also those who create meet records. It would felicitate M.R. Poovamma, member of the 4 X 400 m Asian Games gold medal relay team, Dharun Ayyasamy and Parveen Chitravel. Coach P.T. Usha would attend the inauguration programme.

Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwar would inaugurate the championship. The valedictory function would be held on November 28.
